Why isn't my business showing up on Google? The 7 most common reasons (and how to fix them)

By  Ciro Jaén  · Founder of MALAYA · Operator of experience businesses in Panama and Colombia
Direct answer: if your business isn't showing up on Google, it's almost always one (or several) of these causes: you don't have a verified Business Profile, it's incomplete or in the wrong category, your data is inconsistent across platforms, your website doesn't tell Google what you sell, you have no reviews, or your content doesn't answer what people search for. Every one of them is fixable — and none requires paying for ads.

01You don't have (or haven't verified) your Google Business Profile

The Google Business Profile (formerly "Google My Business") is the listing that appears on the map and in the side panel when someone searches for your business. It's free, and it's the single most important piece of your local visibility. Many businesses never created one; others created it and never completed verification — and an unverified profile practically doesn't exist for Google.

create or claim your profile at business.google.com and complete verification (by video, email or phone depending on the case). It's the best-spent first half hour of your online presence.

02Your profile exists, but it's incomplete or abandoned

Google favors complete, active profiles: correct hours, recent photos, services loaded, and periodic posts. A profile created in 2019 and never touched again tells Google — and your customers — that the business might not even operate anymore.

complete every section of the profile, upload real photos (no stock imagery), and post at least one update a month. Consistency matters more than perfection.

03You're in the wrong category

Your profile's main category defines who you compete against. A coffee-tasting business categorized as a "Coffee shop" competes against every coffee shop in the city — instead of showing up when someone searches for an experience or a tour. It's one of the most common mistakes, and one of the most expensive.

choose the main category that describes your star product, not your venue. Secondary categories cover the rest.

04Your data doesn't match across platforms

If your website says one address, your Google profile another, and your Instagram an old phone number, Google loses trust in your information — and trust is literally the criterion it uses to decide who to show. This is called NAP consistency (name, address, phone).

audit every place your business appears and unify name, address and phone, character by character.

05Your website is invisible to search engines

A site can look beautiful and be unreadable to Google: no titles saying what you sell and where, no structured data explaining your products and prices, slow on mobile, or with text baked into images no search engine can read.

every page needs a title and description written against what your customer actually searches, basic structured data, and decent speed on a phone — where the vast majority of searches happen.

06You have no reviews — or you have them and don't respond

Reviews are your customers' number one decision factor and a ranking signal for Google. And responding counts: a business that answers every review (good and bad) proves it's alive and that it cares.

set up a simple system to ask for the review at the right moment (a QR code at the end of the experience works), and answer all of them within 48 hours.

07You tried shortcuts — or someone tried them for you

Bought reviews, keyword stuffing, junk directories, ten-year-old ranking tricks: all of it gets detected today, and the punishment ranges from losing positions to profile suspension. Getting wiped off Google in one stroke is the fastest way to disappear.

work only with each platform's official practices. It's slower than the shortcut — and it's the only thing that builds an asset that lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a business to show up on Google?

A verified Business Profile can appear on the map within days. Website rankings take longer: technical fixes show effect in weeks, and new content between 3 and 6 months.

Do I have to pay for ads to show up?

No. The profile, the map and organic results are free. Ads accelerate things, but a well-configured business shows up without paying.

Why does my competition show up before me?

Usually: their profile is more complete and active, they have more reviews (and answer them), and their site clearly tells Google what they sell and where.

Can I get removed from Google?

Yes: false information, bought reviews or ranking tricks can cause suspensions or penalties. That's why we only work with official practices.
